Cut Feature Revealed: Space Pirates Almost Playable in Metro

Former Retro Studios developers Jack Mathews and Zoid Kirsch recently revealed a fascinating cut feature from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The team had considered including the iconic Space Pirates as playable characters in the game's multiplayer mode. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, released in 2004 for the GameCube and later ported to the Wii as part of the Metroid Prime Trilogy, introduced new gameplay mechanics, including the Light and Dark worlds and a multiplayer mode, which allowed up to four players to engage in either a deathmatch or coin collection mode.

While the multiplayer mode originally allowed players to control recolored Samuses, Mathews and Kirsch shared that there were plans to bring the Space Pirates into the fold as playable characters. In an interview on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, the developers discussed how the Pirates—who are typically recurring enemies in the Metroid series—were considered for the multiplayer due to their similar build to Samus, making them a good fit for gameplay.

Mathews explained that the developers had explored several unique abilities for the Space Pirates, such as wall-climbing and custom cannon arm models, to differentiate them from Samus. However, the concept didn’t progress far enough to be fully implemented into the game. As a result, the final multiplayer mode of Metroid Prime 2 featured four different colored versions of Samus, each donning the classic Varia suit.

Currently, Retro Studios is focused on developing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, scheduled for release in 2025. The game is set to feature Sylux as the main antagonist, with the Space Pirates returning once again. There are also rumors of a potential HD remaster of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for the Nintendo Switch, although this has yet to be officially confirmed by Retro Studios or Nintendo.
